Dall's Porpoise

METADATA SPECIES EXPLORER

Dall's porpoise typically occurs in habitats beyond the continental shelf. Calving likely takes place throughout the year. Herds of 2-15 individuals are typical (Leatherwood and Reeves, 1986; J. Darling, pers. comm.).

The following description of Dall’s Porpoises is from the Marine Mammals of Haro Strait Website.

The Dall’s Porpoise is endemic to the North Pacific’s cool waters. Dall’s are usually seen in small groups of 3 to 20 animals. They have black and white markings which make they look like a round little Killer Whale. They prefer the deep open ocean waters where they feed on squid, fish and crustaceans. Dall’s are not as shy of humans as Harbour Porpoises and have been seen to ride the bow waves of boats.
